Secure Data, Real Social Value, and Doing IT Disposal Differently
Every year, thousands of public sector organisations retire laptops, desktops, tablets, and other IT equipment. Behind each device is something far more valuable than the hardware itself: data.
For councils, NHS trusts, schools, and other public bodies, securely retiring technology isnโt optional โ itโs a legal, ethical, and reputational necessity. At the same time, organisations are under increasing pressure to demonstrate genuine social value, reduce environmental impact, and support local communities.
Too often, IT disposal forces a compromise.
Security versus sustainability.
Compliance versus cost.
Social value versus commercial reality.
234teen was created to remove that compromise.
Putting Data Security First โ Always
At its core, 234teen exists to solve one problem exceptionally well:
secure, compliant data destruction.
Our primary service is certified data wiping and physical destruction, delivered in line with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and recognised industry standards. Every device is tracked, audited, and issued with a Certificate of Data Destruction.
Crucially, our business does not rely on resale value to be viable.
Security is never downgraded to maximise profit.
There are no perverse incentives โ just clear, auditable compliance.
Thatโs the foundation everything else is built on.
Ethical Refurbishment That Funds Impact
Once data has been securely destroyed, some devices still have life left in them. Where appropriate, those devices are refurbished responsibly in the UK.
Refurbishment revenue is used to:
- Sustain day-to-day operations
- Repair devices that can be donated to good causes
- Create skilled local employment
Any net surplus after parts and costs is donated equally to:
- Great Ormond Street Hospital
- UK autism charities
This isnโt marketing spend or a discretionary gesture โ itโs written into how 234teen operates. We believe public sector assets should continue to deliver public good, even at the end of their first life.
Social Value Built In, Not Bolted On
234teen was designed from day one to align with the Social Value Act.
We run an in-house training programme, delivered through a government-registered learning provider, focused on practical, in-demand skills such as:
- Electronic schematic interpretation
- Fault diagnosis
- Board-level and chip-level repair
This training creates real pathways into employment, particularly for people who may be excluded from traditional routes. It also helps rebuild repair skills in the UK, reducing reliance on overseas processing and unnecessary waste.
Social value isnโt something we promise to think about later.
Itโs how the service works.
Repair First. Reuse Before Recycling.
Environmentally, the greenest device is the one that already exists.
By prioritising repair and reuse, we:
- Reduce landfill and overseas e-waste export
- Extend device life cycles
- Lower embedded carbon emissions
- Support public sector Net Zero commitments
Where devices cannot be reused, they are recycled responsibly through compliant downstream partners.
Looking Ahead
234teen is built to scale responsibly โ starting locally, expanding regionally, and working in partnership with public sector organisations that want more than a tick-box solution.
If youโre a council, NHS trust, or public body looking for a secure IT disposal partner that genuinely aligns with your values, weโd love to talk.
This is just the beginning.
